HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — During the 2025 nesting season, Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head Island (STPHHI) ensured that over 16,000 sea turtle hatchlings made it to the ocean, officials announced Tuesday.
STPHHI is a volunteer organization focused on protecting sea turtles in the Lowcountry through beach monitoring, nest relocation and public education and outreach.
Hilton Head’s first nest was laid on May 7, followed by 236 others. According to their website, they relocated 131 nests to safer locations and all 237 nests hatched.
STPHHI’s team ensured that 16,537 hatchlings made it to the ocean, a spokesperson said. They also responded to 24 stranding events, with five turtles being rehabilitated and returned to the ocean.
These feats didn’t come easily though, volunteers put in over 1,500 hours of work during the 2025 season.
