WHHI TV’s Robyn Zimmerman talks to Amber Kuehn about this year’s sea turtle season on Hilton Head Island, including:
- Nest and hatching counts: With 408 nests on the main beach as of August 4th, we have already surpassed the second biggest nesting year on the island, and with the hotter summer due to El Nino, the incubation time is much faster, with 131 nests hatching so far.
- Public outreach programs: Offered weekly during the summer, including three Put the Beach to Bed programs (Dunes House, Sonesta, Beach House), the Monday Turtle Talk (Lowcountry Celebration park) with a new virtual reality experience offered prior to the talk, and HarbourFest (Shelter Cove).
- The busy off season: Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers remain busy in the off season as well with elementary school curriculum for grades 1-5, genetics lab at USCB, festivals, and preparing for the next nesting season.
With 28 seasons under her belt, Amber still has the passion to protect sea turtles on Hilton Head Island. Click on the video above to watch the interview.
